The Foundation functions with a one-tier international board, including and executive board and a non-executive/administrative board:

NLF board:

Dr. Unnikrishnan Payyappallimana

President of NLF administrative board. Indian medical anthropologist with PhD on International Development Studies. Professor at the University of Trans-Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology (TDU). Formerly he was with the United Nations University (UNU) – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (IAS), Tokyo and the International Institute for Global Health (IIGH), Kaula Lumpur in various capacities. His research interests are traditional medicine, biodiversity and health, public health, and sustainable development.

Hester Foppen

(MSc), Dutch secretary of the NLF board, was trained in language and arts and has worked with coffee growers in Dominican Republic. She worked as senior project officer at Aqua for All, an organization for international cooperation in water management.

Arjen Dijkstra

Treasurer of the NLF board. Trained in Agricultural information science, formarly working for companies on cattle improvement and breeding. Expert in organizational management and marketing, as independent agri-business consultant in Dijkstra Agrimarketing.

Dr. Getachew Gebru Tegegn

Ethiopian PhD in Animal Sciences, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison USA. Director of partnership MARIl, Ethiopia, Chair Agricultural Working group and board member Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. Former president of Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (ESAP). Dr Tegegn headed the Applied Research Fund (ARF) pilot with the NLF strategy Enhancing Safety and Quality of Milk in Ethiopia, a multi-national project in collaboration with researchers and experts from Netherlands, India, and Uganda.

Executive board

Dr. Katrien van ’t Hooft

Is a Dutch veterinary doctor, Executive Director of Natural Livestock Farming Foundation. Between 2014-2016 she headed the successful exchange program funded by Oxfam Novib, which stood at the basis of the NLF foundation. Also director of  Dutch Farm Experience.receiving groups of visitors interested in sustainable Dutch dairy farming.

Prof. Balakrishnan Nair (MSc, Ph.D)

Animal Production professor, expert in pastoralist livestock production systems. Since 2019 President of Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (ESAP). Part of NLF executive board. Research Officer at Pastoralist Forum Ethiopia and engaged in Jigjiga University.

Dr. Daniel Temesgen

Animal Production professor, expert in pastoralist livestock production systems. Since 2019 President of Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (ESAP). Part of NLF executive board. Research Officer at Pastoralist Forum Ethiopia and engaged in Jigjiga University.

Elizabeth Katushabe

Livestock keeper who studied at Makarere University, Uganda. Head of NLF Uganda and part of NLF executive board. Important lobbyist for promoting local Ankole Longhorn cattle. Elizabeth headed the Ugandan branch of PENHA (Pastoral and Environmental Network in East Africa) and is a well known speaker at international for a representing the voice of female cattle keepers. She has also collaborates with the League of Pastoral Peoples and LiFE network

Sjoerd Miedema

Dairy farmer and President of board of NLF Netherlands. Together with his son Douwe, Sjoerd is an innovative organic dairy producer at his farm the Nije Mieden in Friesland, the Netherlands. Active members of dairy cooperation and environmental organizations in Northern Netherlands.

Funding:

The Foundation for Natural Livestock Farming was formally registered in October 2014.
The Foundation is ANBI registered for charity funding since 1 January 2018.

Most of the funding for the activities is acquired through the respective partner organizations. Since 2014 over 3 million euros have been used for implementation of programs in the various countries. The funding for centralized activities through NLF Foundation are relatively small, and used for exchange activities and overall promotion and upscaling of NLF concept.

Finances:

The costs of the Foundation include expenditures for fund raising, administration, website and communication, running office costs and accountancy. The majority of the field activities in favour of Natural Livestock Farming are financed directly through the partner organizations in Netherlands, India, Ethiopia and Uganda. Between 2014 and 2020 a total of 1.5 million Euros were spent on field activities and exchange programs by the respective NLF partners. The direct expenses of the Foundation itself are represented in the annual report.

The Foundation has a limited funding structure  and aims to use a maximum of the available funds to implement activities that contribute directly to its goals. The Foundation has no salaried personnel, the board functions without financial inputs, and volunteers participate in acquiring new funds. The foundation is located at the office of one of the members of the expert working group, with no extra cost.

The Foundation complies with all ANBI regulations as a non-profit organization under Dutch law (ANBI).
